In Sri Lanka, broadcast media are generally divided into state and private media operators and provide services in Sinhala, Tamil and English. Before 2000, apart from state radio stations, there were only a few radio stations operated by three private companies called Asia Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Colombo Communication Limited and Maharaja Broadcasting Corporation; broadcasting in Sinhala, Tamil and English. Through the authorities, many private organizations have obtained broadcasting licenses from the Sri Lanka Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) and have started operating a number of terrestrial radio stations. In 2009, more than thirty state and private radio stations were active in Sri Lanka. Currently, there are many radio networks are active in Sri Lanka as follows. These networks broadcast a variety of programs in Sinhala, Tamil and English to meet the media and entertainment needs of the diverse demographic and ethnically diverse population of Sri Lanka.
